Yesterday I finished my first ever cross stitch. I think it looks really good. The book that the pattern came from said that real cross stitch never show any canvas in the background but I don't think its necessary to cover the whole thing in stitches (it would really lower my motivation if I had to fill in all the blank areas). I've hung it above the computer so that I can look at it when I need to rest my eyes.

I'm with you ... imagine trying to fill in all that white!!
It's so gorgeous... and I completely agree about not covering the entire canvas. I think the fact that you left it blank would make the stitched areas even more of a focus.
